I have a Nanday who was really quite ill towards the end of last year, but made a full and rather miraculous recovery. He is getting on a bit, now around 23/24 years old.

Recently, instead of flying around, he has taken to climbing down items (me, the cage, the sofa) to walk around the floor, so now I have to watch where I walk, but he has also taking to just huddling up and going to sleep on the floor instead of all his usual and safe places.

Is this the sign of something or is he just being more quirky than normal?

Thanks for asking. There is no telling why he is preferring the floor, that can't be determined over the internet unfortunately.

It is possible that since the bird doesn't have to use it's energy stores to balance on the floor, it prefers the floor.

In case you didn't know, make sure this is a bird safe room, and make sure you remove your shoes before walking into the room. You don't want to bring in disease from outdoors to the bird on your shoes or feet.

Of course, make sure nothing toxic or dangerous is in the room. Make sure the bird can't climb up into furniture and get stuck or chew something toxic in the furniture.
