Bird lost all tail feathers!

by Saira

My bird did not want to get picked up and tried to fly out of my hands. I tried to stop him and even though I didn't try to hang on to his tail feather, they all came out!!!

He doesn't look like he feels hurt and is not bleeding. What do I do? Is he going to be ok? He looks terrible. Oh I am so scared!!! Please help him.

Plz help!!! URGENT
by: Anonymous

I have an Indian ringneck parakeet who is three years old.I am really worried about its flight and tail feathers growth bcz when it was one year old or maybe a little older than that,it's feathers slowly started to fall out and they did grow back a little but it didn't last long, they fell off again. Its tail growed a little like one feather at a time I don't know what went and they fell off too, I think maybe it's bcz the single feather didn't have enough support to grow on its own. But my parrot is really active and shows no signs of illness. It plays, eats and talks really well. As I cannot go to a vet so plz kindly help me with this. And plz do tell what to give to my parrot which can help it to grows its feathers fast and healthy.

Cockatiel tail feathers
by: Anonymous

I have five cockatiels happy and very well taken care of. But one of my birds tail feathers fell out am I'm not sure why. Maybe fighting or possibly molting. This happened over night when everyone was sleeping I hope he is molting. Can someone explain to me why this happened.

Editor's note: If someone or something tried to grab the bird it may have released it tail feathers to keep from being caught. They will grow back if this is the case. If not, your bird needs to be seen by an avian vet.

love bird without a tal
by: Anonymous

My little one held on to her lovebird and as he tried to get out, his tail feathers all came out. I felt nauseated!!!!I didn't know that birds have this defense mechanism against predators (or kids). I'm glad to know that he will likely grow his feathers back and will not look like kiwi bird forever.

Tiel Lost Tail Feathers
by: Anonymous

My tiels have lost tail feathers by suddenly taking flight when I'm holding them and they usually grow back very quickly, within a few weeks. However, one tiel lost some of his tail feathers and a couple tried to grow back but they came in crooked and the others never have grown back and it's been over a year. Very unusual.

conure lost 3 feathers in tail
by: Anonymous

I am so glad for this site. My conure just lost 3 tail feathers. We were outside listening to the birds in the trees. I thought I had her cuddled up good but she tried to fly away. I held on to her --it was scary.

Lost Feathers
by: Anonymous

Someone in my neighborhood rev'd up their Harley Davidson and my Green Cheek took off and lost her tail feathers when I scooped her up (I grabbed from the back). She was scared by the loud noise. It is a self defense mechanism in the wild when predators grab birds they get a mouth full of feathers instead of the bird. They do grow back, however my bird took over a month! (She has a very good diet so that was not the problem, just grows in feathers slowly).

Be very careful with your bird until the feathers grow back - remember they use these to fly and for balance and won't have them for a while. Keep your bird in low places or where they cannot fall monitor closely - don't set your bird up somewhere high he/she might land incorrectly and get hurt.

Also, when all the tail feathers grow out at once, the tail feathers can be sensitive for the bird - delicately move the bird and try to avoid touching those areas, they will be all blood feathers. Your bird may need some extra care and attention if he/she is a character, remember birds have feelings too and may be a little embarrassed. I wouldn't allow any laughing in my house at my birds expense no matter how funny the stubby tail looked!

Bird lost tail feathers
by: Tracie

It's okay, this happened to me once too. It is very scary, but it is likely that the bird released his tail feathers, you didn't "pull" them out. This is something built in them to protect themselves from predators in the wild.

The tail feathers will grow back within a few weeks and he will be as good as new.
