Bird Nibbling her Tail feathers

by Rodney
(Birmingham, UK)

Hello, I got a Pineapple Green Cheak, And she is fine in temperment and eating well, Only problem is she tends to nibble on her tail feathers until only the main stem is left. Change position of cage, Ensured constant water changes and cleaned the bowls. Is there some ointment i can put on to deter her from carrying on to stop the habit before she runs out of tail and starts on something else. Thank you

No there is nothing topical that I can recommend. I recommend that she be examined by an avian veterinarian to be sure the is no medical cause. I also recommend that you feed her pellets and use a water bottle instead of a bowl. Water bowls grow bacteria within 2-3 hours, water bottles do not grow bacteria for 2-3 days or more. Change the bottle every 24 hours and check it 2-3 times daily to be sure it is working.

Bacterial infections are a cause for feather damaging behaviors. I have also attached an article I wrote that may help with the plucking too.
