Kiwi is 12 years old and has started sitting on the bottom of his cage. He will climb up to eat and drink but goes to bottom to sit and sleep. Is he dying?

Hi Cyndi, you didn't give enough information about your bird; you didn't say what kind of bird he is. Some birds only live for so many years you know? I would advise you to take your bird for a check up by an AVIAN VET and no one else. The sooner you do this the better.
I personally think that your lovely bird may've suffered a stroke and can't hold onto the perch; hence the reason he sits on the bottom of his cage to sleep. BUT to be certain, please take your dear little bird to the vet as I've already mentioned.
I feel so very sad for you because I know what you're going through this very moment. My birds are like my children and I was in a similar situation ONLY five months ago. One of my dear little birds had suffered a second stroke and couldn't stay on her perch. She sat on the bottom of her cage and couldn't even drink water. I WASTED NO TIME in taking her to her doctor (Avian Vet). It was very sad when I was given two options: leave her alone and she'll die in a few hours or days or pay him to put her to sleep. It was a very difficult decision to make but I did not want her suffering another minute so I paid him and chose the second option. I held her until her VERY LAST breath; my sweet baby whom had given me so much happiness was now gone to rest in peace.
So please take your dear little bird to the vet and hope for the best news. BUT if not, do what you've to do my friend to ease the pain and suffering of your poor little baby. DO NOT THINK THAT I AM BEING BLUNT OR TOO HARSH WITH YOU. No I am not that kind of person; I just love animals too much and I don't like to see them suffering. I'll be keeping you both in my prayers and you don't give up but be strong. God bless you both.

There is no way Dr B or anyone can tell if your bird is dying, ill or anything over the Internet, sorry. Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.
