bird twitching

hi i have an african grey parrot around 5yrs old the last couple of days he seems to be itching and twitching a lot the only way to describe it is the same sort of reaction that a dog has when a fleas bites it! he be okay then a twitch as if something bitten him then he chews at the area can dog or cat fleas affect parrots?? he has been treated for mites
any advise would be helpful

Hi Kim and thanks for writing. Unless you took him to an Avian Vet who diagnosed mites, you still don't know what is wrong with him. Take him to an Avian Vet in your driving area and have them diagnose what type of parasite this is, or if it is a parasite. Mites are common as birds usually don't get fleas unless they are allowed in the floor or on the ground outside which is not recommended.

Please don't use any over the counter meds on him as these don't work most of the time and can and do poison birds. Use what the Avian Vet gives you to use and have him checked out thoroughly for anything else this might be besides mites. He may be experiencing an allergy to a food or something which would be treated differently than a parasite.
