Bird with blood around his mouth

by Alysha
(England)

Hello last night my bird was sitting on the bottom of the cage in the corner he is a cockatiel is is very much unlike him he looks so I'll. He was not eating or drinking usually he loves food. I was really worried I put him asleep hoping if was a mild flu and that tomorrow he would at least show signs of getting better, but this morning when I woke up he had bloo all around his mouth already dried and there was blood splatter all up the walls as soon as u woke

I immediately checked on him, when I saw him I was histerical I panicked I took him out he has not visibly hurt himself. So I phoned up our nearest vets and rushed him there straight away the vet seemed unsure. He gave him an injection and some antibiotics? He checked his tounge and he has not hurt his mouth but the back of the tounge seems sore?

The the vet examined him he hardly put up a fight, usually he would be biting and scratching. Could you please help me we have been given a weekly dose of antibiotics I'm so upset and scarred his only 6 years old I don't want to loose him so soon thankyou

If you've taken your bird to the vet, and he's given you meds for the bird, then all you need to do is your part, give the meds as prescribed, and wait.

Your vet can do additional testing, I suggest you take your bird back to the vet, and have some blood work done to rule out any organ failure or diease. Your vet can also run biopsies. Seems to me if your vet can't figure out what's wrong with him, then you should consult a second vet, one who specializes in birds, and pay for the testing that needs to be done.

You bird is obviously sick, and needs proper medical attention by a vet who specializes in just birds. Not one of those all-around-vets that sees mainly dogs and cats with the occassional iguana, and guinea pig.

I wish you and your bird the best of luck.

Dr B can not help without examining your bird. It doesn't sound like you have an avian vet for your birds. Please Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird right away.
