Black Masked Lovebird pulling out feathers

My black masked lovebird has just recently started pulling out his feathers. He is almost totally bare on his tummy. He is a happy active bird at the age of 14. Why would he be doing this?

Dr B suggests you read his Feather Damaging Behavior article for more information on birds that damage or pluck their feathers.

Because he can not examine your bird for internal problems and discuss what you feed your bird or potential toxins in your home, you need to Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird in person.

Colored pellets, bathing in water dishes and table food can cause birds to pluck due to causing bacterial or yeast infections. For instance ZuPreem has lots of sugar which can cause yeast infections and can lead to digestive problems. Also all of the artificial ingredients can cause problems too.

If you are not feeding a high quality pellet diet, then please read our Switching Birds To Pellets article to help you get your bird on either a different pellet or on pellets instead of seed and table food diet.
