Bleeding, bald spot

My moms love bird is missing some feathers about a 1/4 inch back and slightly down from right eye. There appears to be some blood spots there as well. I asked her and she said the bird needs it's nails cliped. I am pretty smart with animals just not a whole lot with birds. I think it is at the location of the ear and would think the bird has ear mites. So I am hoping you can help and or advise?? Thank you so much for your time.

Unless the bird is kept outside, it is unlikely ear mites. Please read the Feather Damaging Behavior article that Dr B, the avian vet, wrote.

Dr B can't help you, because he would need to examine the bird to be able to tell you what is wrong. If it is the nails causing the feather loss and bleeding, then taking the bird to an avian vet for a nail trim and exam would be the best thing to do. The bird could get an infection from the cuts also.
