blue and gold hangs on cage to sleep

by Frank
(Sun Prairie, WI)

My blue and gold is hanging on the side of the cage when its time to sleep, instead of standing on his perch, like he normally does. What does this mean?

Hanging on the side of the cage to sleep?

Try adding a perch about the spot where the bird is hanging. My green wing macaw did this after he got his cage for about 3 weeks until I tried a perch where he was hanging to sleep. He was just trying to get as high as possible which is a natural response for them from what I have read.

Maybe his perches are hurting his feet. Parrots need safe natural wood branch perches in their cage bacause the wooden dowels that come with cages hurt their feet and cause early arthritis.

You can find these perches with hardware already installed that are made from various safe woods. Manzanita is a good wood for the large birds like Macaws and Cockatoos. Make sure overall diameter is the correct size for your bird' feet.

If this continues, and you already have natural branch perches in cage, then your bird may be sick. Illness shows as loose stools, runny noses or eyes, sitting fluffed up, not as energetic as he's always been and less interest in food. If you have seen any of these signs, your bird has to be examined by an AVIAN VET only in your driving area.
