blue and gold macaw

Macaws and Cockatoos are the Great Escape Artists and learn how to open simple cage closures very quickly. If it is possible to put a lock on it, then do so. Of course, you'll have to keep up with the key because I'm talking about something along the lines of a Master Lock which uses a key. If your closing has a place you can put the lock through, it will keep him in. It will also be a bit of a hassle, but you'll still have to do it if you want him to stay in.

The other option is to buy another cage with a safety lock on it for these kinds of birds, but that is a major expense, and a lock will keep him in without all the extra expense. We have a double Macaw cage for our two Amazons, and the locks are made to where a Macaw or Too won't be able to operate them from inside the cage. As I said, a new cage is just too expensive.

Please do not use any kind of wire to lock the door as this will cause serious injury when Macaw works on it to get out, and he will do that. Try a regular master lock or whatever kind you can find that will keep the door closed.

The next problem you may have is bird tearing the cage to get out. If your bars are made of fairly strong steel, Macaw will find it too much work to do that(they ARE a bit on the lazy side). If, however, your bars are not strong, Macaw may tear it up to get out. I know Toos will do this, but I've never had problems with Macaws doing it.

Keep us posted and thanks for writing,
Linda
