Blue/Gold Macaw biting

by Christy
(AL)

I have a Blue/Gold Macaw, I am the only one that he will allow to touch him. However, the only time I can touch him is if I get him on a stick..then he will let me massage the back of his neck..and rub under his wings. if he is on his cage, I cant touch him...he tries to bite me too. Is there something I can do to be able to walk up & pick him up? I want to love on him, but dont want to lose a limb either.

thanks

Blue/Gold Macaw biting

You need to respect your bird's wishes. Most of the Macaws and all of the Amazons do not like being "loved on" too much and will let their humans know this by biting when they're tired of all the touching and petting.

If your bird is taller than you when on top of cage, this is normal behavior. In a flock of birds, the one that is the highest is the one in control. So continue to use the stick to pick him up from both top of cage and inside.

You did not say how long you've had this bird, and trust is earned not freely given. If you're still in the first year, you are still proving to him you can be trusted.

Be patient and don't force him to allow you to pet on him if he does not like it. This is all part of learning about your bird, and all of them have their own set of likes and dislikes just like humans.

Keep in touch,
Linda
