bondi, parakeet, won't sit on eggs

by Bondi

Our female parakeet, 1.5 yrs old, has been breeding daily with our male parakeet, 1.5yrs old.
Bondi, female, has laid 2 eggs in 3 days.

She will not sit on the eggs.

Humans put the eggs in the open straw nest in the cage. We also bought another straw nest with roof and large opening on side. The two nests are from Petco.

How do we get Bondi to sit on the eggs?
Are these types of nests sufficient?

Thank you.

Parakeet not sitting on eggs

Dr B recently suggested that you boil the eggs and put them back in the nest, if you are really concerned the bird will eat them. Do NOT take them away for good, the bird might just keep laying eggs until she dies.

Also, make sure your bird is on a healthy pellet diet, like Harrison's to prevent egg binding and other health problems.

Yes, the budgies need a closed in nestbox, and they make them. The boxes are usually made to hang on the OUTSIDE of the cage with only the hole and perch inside the cage. This allows you access to the eggs and babies from the back. If your cage does not have an opening already in it for a nestbox, you may want to get one that does. If not, you will have to cut a hole big enough for the opening of the box. You'll also have to make sure the flap has no sharp edges on it and that it can be firmly and completely closed when nesting is done. Breed NO more than once a year if that because the hen uses up a lot of her body's reserves making and laying eggs not to mention raising the babies. Both your birds need to be eating an organic, high quality pelleted diet, like Harrison's , as health birds make healthy babies, and birds eating an all seed diet make sickly babies likely to die.Tracie carries several kinds of the organics out here, and make sure grind is appropriate for your bird's size.

Thanks for writing,

Budgie not sitting on eggs

You need an appropriate next box. Budgies are not going to nest on those straw nests. They prefer a wooden nest BOX and no bedding. Put a little bedding in there, preferable aspen shavings, but they will likely kick it out. The box should be approximately 8" x 6" x 8" tall.

Hi, Sometimes birds don't sit on eggs until the clutch is nearly all done being laid. This as in the wild, enables the hatchlings to hatch around the same time so there are no older than younger birds, who would be at risk for survival from the older birds.
Also, too, if you touched the eggs that can cause for abandonment.

I have raised parakeets in the past and it has been my experience that they will not sit on eggs in an open nest, they do make nest boxes that are more approriate for them to breed in, and usually require privacy,(the box is closed and usually has a top that you can open to veiw.
