Bored or Sick??

My male budgie is about 3-4years old. When we bathed him yesterday we noticed feathers missing around his stomach and vent area. I have looked on the internet and some websites say he is bored but I am not sure. He eats a seed diet and always has clean water. I also noticed him eating is own poo..is it just boredom or a bug?

Thanks Tracie, he has been acting normally lately so I don't think he is sick. He has still been eating, drinking, sleeping and talking/chirping. Just before I checked this I did notice him rubbing himself on one of his perches but I got him to stop. However if he is sick, do you think it could kill him?? I do not have an Avian Vet near me and I am very worried that he may die.

When I have time I will switch part of his diet to pellets. Thanks again.

Bird without feathers around vent

You will need to Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird, because Dr B would need to see the bird and run tests to be able to tell you what is going on.

It is likely a health issue, budgies rarely pick from boredom and they don't pick their vent area. It could be rubbing it's feathers off if you see it rubbing on perches etc. Some males do this.

Please introduce pellets to your bird's diet, so that it will have a longer, healthier life. An all seed diet will eventually kill your bird.

Your budgie should be eating about 70% pellets, like Harrison's or Roudybush and only about 30% seed.
