Breathing difficulties and falling

by Carole
(South Africa)

My blue fronted amazone struggles to breathe and sometimes fall and make sounds like having an epeleptic attack. What can be the problem and how should we treat it.

Bird with breathing difficulties and falling

Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.

Don't worry about the driving distance, it is worth the drive. There is not anything that can be suggested because you don't know what is causing this behavior and you can't purchase avian medications over the counter here in the US. I don't know about other countries. No matter what, you can't, and shouldn't attempt, treat an unknown illness or disease.

You should make sure that there is nothing toxic the bird is breathing and nothing toxic it can chew or eat. If your bird gets out of the cage, it should not be walking or flying around the house where it can chew something toxic brought in on your shoes or sitting around in your home.

Air fresheners, essential oils, Teflon heated up, gas leaks etc. can kill birds rather quickly too.
