broken off bottom mandible

by Helen

4 days ago my mustached Parakeet's bottom mandible broke,or I should say fell off. (No sign of decay, etc.) There is still about 1/8" left on the bird. I am feeding a soft food diet, so it's doing fine.
The real question is will the beak grow back ?

Thank you, Helen

Bird with broken beak
by: The Avian Vet

Maybe, maybe not, depending on what is left on the bird. If it does grow back, then it could grow in an abnormal shape. Have you had your bird examined by an avian veterinarian to be sure that your bird does not need reconstructive beak repair, antibiotics, etc.?

Helen, you need to get your bird to an Avian Vet immediately. It sounds like it could be Psittacine Beak and Feather disease, and it will not get better, it will get much, much worse. Take your bird to the vet and ask for the test for the PBFD to rule it in or out. I don't want to scare you, but this is a disease that has no cure and takes all the birds feathers, toenails, and beak leave it naked and unable to eat without a tube inserted into stomach with liquid food.

So, please get to the Avian Vet as soon as you can and have your bird tested. The treatment options involve supportive care for the duration of the bird's life as there is no cure. I do think there is a vaccine available now and if your bird does not have it, then get the vaccine into him on the same visit.

I hope all goes well, and if bird tests positive for it, then talk with the Avian vet about the disease and how you can support your bird to the end. This disease lingers in an environment for years, and is highly contageous, so until your home tests clear for the disease do not bring anymore birds into your home. I hope it is not this horrible thing that is causing your bird's beak loss and will keep you in prayers for a good outworking of this situation.
