Budgie Balding Vent

by Chris
(TX)

Budgie Vent

Budgie Vent

One of my 4 month old budgies is balding around his vent, he had this when we first picked him up from the store. His stool looks normal in consistency, nothing that would indicate diarrhea. We never see him or his cage mate pulling feathers out of the area. We purchased them from bird store that sells birds from local breeders. He was in a cage with multiple other budgies.

I have read on the internet one such possibility could be other budgie cage mates picking out the feathers.

Bird balding at vent
by: The Avian Vet

This can be due to many different causes. Self plucking is a thought, but there must be a cause such as an infection, abdominal pain, parasites, etc. It could also be from masturbating. I recommend that you have your bird examined by an avian veterinarian.

Thanks Tracie. Yes we have am appointment with an AAV certified avian vet, Dr. Laura Brazelton, at Summer Tree Clinic here in Dallas TX http://www.summertreeclinic.com/site/view/114611_Veterinarians.pml

We realize Dr.B's opinon should not substitute for a proper avian vet visit since he cannot examine the bird in person. However, we would like his best educated opinion as to what may be wrong before we visit with the avian vet on weds.

Here is a more clear picture of the birds vent, please view it instead of the one I attached in the original message (link removed, you have to be a member to see it.)

Budgie with bald vent

Eventually Dr B will answer your question, but I would Find an Avian Vet to make an appointment with in the mean time. It could be an infection that is causing the bird to pick at it's vent.
