Budgie died

by Dylan Tedder
(Howell NJ)

Parakeet opening and closing mouth, stretching neck and itching on perch frequently. My budgies friend died on august 5th, Just wondering if this has to do with a stress related problem or just some other type of problem

budgie died

There is just no way Dr B or anyone can tell you why your budgie friend died. I am sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately, most people find their budgie friends at large pet store chains and those birds come from mass breeding situations where there is little care for their health. Most birds already have health problems before they arrive at the store.

Try to find either a pet store or breeder that has their birds checked by an avian vet before selling them. They will provide a certificate of good health, if they have taken the bird to an avian vet.

Then, once you purchase the bird, make sure you switch the bird over to a healthy pellet diet, like Harrison's or Roudybush if the bird is not already eating pellets. Colored pellets and ZuPreem brand are cheap pellets that are not good for birds, so don't feed them to your bird.

Birds on an all seed diet will often die of fatty liver disease and have other health issues from a lack of proper nutrition.
