Hi, I've had my budgies for a few years now and i know they sometimes stand with only one foot. But my male budgie, Sunny, isn't curling up or tucking his left foot in his feathers like he usually does. I touched his foot and it doesn't seem to bother him when i do, he won't bite or anything. But I find it odd that he won't curl it up and that he clearly avoids putting weight on it. Is it sore or should I go to the vet?
The other issue is does he have safe wood natural branch perches in his cage? If he does not, then his feet and legs are suffering. Sitting on the wooden dowels that come with cages hurts bird's feet and legs and brings on early arthritis. They have to grip too hard because the dowels are all same size diameter. This hurts many birds, and always change out the wooden dowels for safe natural wood branch perches before putting a bird into the cage.
You can find the already made perches in lots of pet stores and on the internet. Get the ones for your bird's size feet.
So, go ahead and take him to avian vet for a look at the foot, then change out the bad perches for good ones so he can get some rest.
