Budgie having seizures

by briony
(Milton Keynes)

Please can you help? We have an old budgie, he was my partners before we met and he is about 15 years old! He has always flown freely around the house and lived a healthy life. About 9 months ago he appeared to have hurt his wing, it was hanging low, and he was having trouble flying. We took him to the vet and the vet said the wing wasn't broken, but may be bruised. The budgie never regained his ability to fly around the room, just short distances from perch to perch (more a jump).

He has now started having seizures, and goes round and round on the cage floor screaching. It happened maybe once a month, then fortnightly and now most weeks. It breaks my heart, but all the vet offers it to put him down. When the seizure is over (it lasts 2 - 5 mins)he pants for a little while, then manages to climb back up to his swing, and after a short while starts swinging, eating and singing again.

I just don't know what to do - please can you help?

Best wishes
Briony (and 'no-name')

parakeet seizures
by: Debbie

I have a year-old parakeet named Orbie. A few weeks ago, he flew wildly in the cage as I was trying to clean the perches. Later that night, he was sitting on the bottom, leaning to one side, looking like he was very weak & ready to die. He did survive, but has not been right since. He seems very fragile, still weak & unsteady, & has seizures several times a day. It breaks my heart. I am taking him to the vet. I want him to live, but not to suffer. I hope they can help him.

Bird having seizures
by: Tracie

Without a diagnosis of what is causing the seizures, Dr B can not make any recommendations. If you are not seeing an avian vet, then you can look for one on our Find an Avian Vet page. There are links at the top if you don't see one listed on the page.

If you are seeing an avian vet, and he suggests that you put the bird to sleep, then that is probably the only solution. I am so sorry, I can imagine this is very difficult for you.
