Budgie illness - respiratory symptoms

by Hannah

My budgie has had these respiratory symptoms. Breathing through mouth regularly, puffed up, tail bobbing, skiddish after being hand trained. I can't afford to take him to a vet so I wanted to know how to treat the illness an what exactly it is. And how much would a vet cost for this type illness?

You can look for an avian vet at this link, and if none are listed on the page that are in your area, use the link at the top of the page to do a search.

ill budgie

I am afraid that the bird needs to see an avian vet. Most will make payment plans.

Birds have very weak immune systems and can die from the common cold as their respiratory systems are also extremely small.

Keep the budgie warm. Try and find a heating pad to put under the cage n a low heat until you get an appointment.

DO NOT delay, your bird will only deteriorate without treatment.

Let us know how he gets on at the vet.

Your bird cannot be left sick like this. He is too sick to be doing any training or anything else with him except getting him to an Avian Vet ONLY. You can find and call an Avian Vet for an appointment right away. Sometimes they will work out a payment plan with you, and make sure you don't miss even one payment. This way, you establish credit which can help you take better care of your bird. He will die from this infection as it will go into pneumonia and kill him if you don't get him the help he needs.

As for how much it will cost, probably not too much since this sounds like a bacterial infection which can be treated with only Avian Vet prescribed meds. Do not give any over the counter meds including those found in pet shops because until you know what kind of infection this is, it cannot be treated without possibly killing your bird.
