Budgie is shaking and whimpering.

by Natasha

My budgie is about 8 years old and just the other day she started making strange noises. Almost as though she's whimpering. She is also shaking. Her tail mostly. It is going up and down, and seems as though it's vibrating.

She is still eating, flying and chirping as usual, although she seems a little more persistent to spend time with me. I've read that she might have a respiratory infection, but my mum says that a vet can't help. Do you know what might be going on? Should I take her to the vet?

Bird shaking and whimpering

An avian vet CAN help, but if your mum will not take the bird to an avian vet, then you need to keep the bird warm and probably lower the perches, feeding dish and water bottle so that if the bird falls it won't have far to fall.

You can tell your mum that most avian vets will take payments, in case that will help. Find an Avian Vet

Please understand that most parents purchase budgies because they don't cost much, and have no idea that they need to eat high quality pellet diets like Harrison's or Roudybush to stay healthy, and vet visits are just not in the budget. They purchased an inexpensive bird thinking they would not have to pay much to keep it alive.

Now that you know differently, please save up money for healthy food and vet visits before getting another pet. I didn't know all of this either until a few years ago and was just like your mum. ;-)

If you end up with another bird, please read our Switching Birds To Pellets article before trying to convert your bird to pellets. Some birds take a very long time to decide pellets are food, and you just have to keep trying to get them to eat them.
