Budgie, is she sick?

by Linda

I just got my budgie yesterday and she was really quiet, then this morning I took her outside and she talked for a while with some other birds and was really happy. Then I took her inside and she's been flying around a lot for a while now and keeps on scratching her stomach with both legs and biting her stomach. And then sometimes for no reason her feathers get bigger and she gets bigger and then she ruffles them.

I wonder if she got a disease or something from the birds outside. Also she's chirping a lot like really loudly and anxiously and I'm really worried that she's trying to tell me something should I take her to a vet?? We just got her yesterday and she was kind of expensive so my mum doesn't want to take her to a vet so soon. Please help me, thank you so much!

Worried budgie owner.

Was your bird in a cage, and did the wild birds land on the cage? It's unlikely that your bird would get something from other birds, if you were there with the bird at all times and the bird was in a cage.

This could be totally unrelated to the outdoor event, the bird could have an infection or disease before you ever brought the bird home.

If the bird continues to scratch itself and biting itself, you need to take the bird to an avian vet for an exam. Ask your breeder who examined your bird for a well exam before you purchased the bird, if they ever took the bird to an avian vet. (Which is doubtful, and thus your bird could be sick.)

Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.
