grass

DO NOT wash the grass with anti fungal or anti bacterial stuff as you WILL poison the budgies and the grass will taste awful.

Try growing some grass from your budgie seed.

Also, it would be best for your budgies health to transfer to a pellet diet like Harrison's. Harrison's looks expensive, but considering how much they ill eat compared to the seed, it will be worth it.

Tracie can provide the link on converting your budgies to pellets.

My budgies have been on pellets for 2 years and they love them.

Pellets should make up 80% of their diet and seeds and treats like fruit and veg 20%.

Let us know how they get on.

sneezing budgie
by: Alex

It may be an allergy to grass pollen or something for your male.

Could the grass have pollutants on it that could be causing the problems?

The weight loss is a problem, and therefore she may be feeling unwell.

The best thing would be to book her or even better both birds to have a health check up with an avian vet.

thanks for your help!no,i did not see any discharge or wetness above the cere and the bobbing is rather mild!the bird is less active but seems to eat and drink normally!but she seemed to have developed the symptoms after i gave her some seeding grass(washed).so could that have anything to do with the sneezing?how can i tell if it's air sac mites?she seems to have lost some weight.i have a male budgie in a separate cage that sneezes whenever i put grass in the cage but is very active and playful
!can stale seeds cause the problem?

sneezing
by: Alex

Linda, jerking movements when sneezing is normal. The same when we sneeze, our head moves. Budgies head can jerk during a sneeze.

I have seen this movements plenty of times when my budgies have sneezed. All mine have jerked their heads during a sneeze.

It is still a good idea to have the bird checked out if this is continuous rather than a few times throughout the day, has discharge from the nostrils when sneezing or the tail is bobbing heavily.

Your bird has to be examined in person by an Avian Vet ONLY. Do not give any meds because you do not know what is wrong, and the meds can kill your bird. The sneezing is symptom of illness or disease and head jerking is something to do with the nervous system. The meds alone can cause seizures and death. Never give birds any kind of meds, over the counter drugs or herbs without having them as prescriptions from an avian vet.

Your bird is sick and will die without being examined, diagnosed and treated by an avian vet who is licensed and trained in the care of birds. Your other birds will also need to be examined because infections are highly contagious. Take care of this one sick bird first to see what is wrong.

Sneezing budgie
by: Alex

All budgies will sneeze, and some more than others.

My budgies sneeze at different times of the day.

I used to have one that would have a sneezing fit every morning.

I have two questions:

1) When your budgie sneezes is there any discharge coming from the nostrils?

2) You say that the tail is bobbing. Is the bobbing a large bob, i.e. does it bob heavily or is it just a slight bob / flick

I had a female budgie who bobbed very slightly, and the avian vet was never worried, she just breathed heavier.

If there is discharge from the nostrils and / or the tail is bobbing heavily, then I would suggest a check up at an avian vet.
