budgie pulling blood feathers

by chris
(wattle grove,nsw,australia)

my male budgie is not very stressed but is constantly pulling at his blood feathers. we are very worried that he might bleed but he does not want to stop it.
he lives in a cage with a male budgie that he had stayed with when we bought him at the pet shop.
is there anything we can do to stop him ???

Pulled blood feathers are a very serious problem. Sometimes birds bleed out as long as feather is still in the skin. When a blood feather is broken, it has to be pulled straight out using needle nose pliers or bird will bleed out.

I suggest you Find an Avian Vet in your area to rule in or out some kind of infection or other physical problem. The other bird may be trying to hurt this one, so I suggest you get another cage set up and move him into it for the duration.

Budgies are very aggressive birds, and if the cage is too small, both birds are becoming frustrated which causes all kinds of hurtful behaviors.

So, to sum up, put feather pulling bird into his own cage, take him to an Avian Vet to be checked for infections or a parasite of some kind that would cause him to do this. Give him nice wooden chew toys to play with as birds love to chew wood to bits. Tracie also has some other kinds of shreddible toys on this site for both your birds.

Birds need something to do, so outfit both cages with a few toys to chew on and some to destroy. Most birds do not like all the plastic toys WE like, so get them stuff THEY like.

Let us know what Avian Vet has to say, and we'll look forward to hearing from you,

Linda
