budgie standing on 1 foot

by Andy

My parakeet stands on 1 foot and in my care sheet, it says that if they do that, there sick. And also, When my female budgie gets close to my male one, his pupil gets small. What should I do? Should I be worried?

All birds stand on one foot from time to time. If your bird has the plain dowel rods that came with cage, then his feet and legs are hurting and tired, and these poor quality perches will cause early onset of arthritis. Birds need to be standing on safe wood natural branch perches in the diameter for their size.

You can find this kind of perch with hardware already installed on the internet and in some pet stores who carry bird supplies. You have to measure inside of cage from one side to the other to get the correct length. There is a washer for the inside and one for the outside with a nut attachment to the one outside.

If your bird is not eating much, is tired all the time and spends a lot of time fluffed up, then he is sick and will have to be taken to an Avian Vet in your driving area to be checked for infections or other physical issues. Take him ONLY to an Avian Vet as dog and cat vets are not licensed or trained in care of birds and will either do nothing or kill him with the wrong diagnosis and too much meds.

Let us know how it goes,
Linda
