Budgie weight

I was wondering how much should a 7-8 month old normal green male budgie weigh? My budgie weighs 33 grams currently is that a healthy weight for a 7-8 month old male budgie?? How can you tell if your budgie has too much body fat?? My main question is 5 days ago the same budgie I described was 32 grams now five days later he is 33 grams.Should this be to my concern?

Thankyou very much!!

Proper budgie weight
by: The Avian Vet

This body weight is average for a budgie and the 1 gram weight gain is insignificant. However, you cannot just look at the number, it is important to also examine the bird and feel or look to see if there are any fat deposits on the body. I recommend that you have your bird seen by an avian veterinarian for a thorough exam. This should be done annually along with blood work and vaccinations to screen for and prevent disease.

Budgie weight

Not sure about proper weight for a baby Budgie, and you can find that by doing a search on Budgie weight or Budgies care and feeding or something along those lines. The gain of a gram is NOT of any concern, and he has not had time to accumulate any fat yet.

One thing you do need to consider is getting him onto a high quality organic pelleted diet. An all seed diet is a poor diet and will cause all kinds of physical problems including fat accumulation. Seeds do not provide necessary vitamins and minerals and a proper range of proteins. The DO provide a lot of carbs and fats and cause fatty liver disease and other serious problems as time goes on. Birds on all seed diets die at a much earlier age and do not have a chance of living a full life.

Tracie carries several of the organics out here, and you need to get some of one or two or Harrison's is the best and is Avian Vet endorsed. It takes time to make the change, and here is an article about how to go about the change written by an Avian Vet, our own Dr. B. Switching Birds to Pellets article.

So, your concern for your bird's welfare is appreciated, and you sound like you want what is best for your bird. We always appreciate talking with people such as yourself and welcome you anytime, for any reason to write us and let us know how things are going with your little birdy friend,

Thanks much for writing,
