budgie

by didi
(canada)

I just discovered a tumor / lump by his bum. I believe this is causing interuption for him to do his poop. He sort of has diarrhea. He is 8 so I have been told by a breeder that perhaps the best is just to let him enjoy the rest of his life and it's not really worth taking him to the vet.

Do you have any suggestions on what I could do to perhaps ease the pain if he is in any? What could I do to continue making him happy and I want him to continue eating not to loose his appetite. Thanks

Budgie with tumor
by: Tracie

The bird is likely in pain, and without treatment will probably not last long. If you wish for the bird to get treatment for the tumor, you can Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird.

It is possible that your bird has fatty liver disease, if you have been feeding your bird an all seed diet, or even a seed and fresh food diet. The way to avoid fatty liver disease, is to feed your birds either Harrison's or Roudybush pellets for the main part of it's diet.

Most birds should eat 80% pellets, but budgies should eat 60 - 70% pellets and the rest should be healthy treats including some seed.

It may take up to a year to get a bird to start eating pellets, if the breeder did not wean to pellets. You can read our Switching Birds To Pellets article for help in switching future birds to pellets.
