When you buy the seed, if the bag is clear, you can sometimes see webbing from the egg sacks.

Honestly the bugs won't hurt the bird if they happened to eat one.

I normally freeze my seed for 24 hrs. It seems to do the job.

However, I only buy seed as a means to treat my bird during training or for good behavior. I keep her on Roudybush pellet diet. Pellets essentially are best for your bird.

If your bird is mainly a seed eater, and slowly switching them to pellets isnt working as well as you'd like... make sure to have a vitamin supplament. Sunshine Factor is a pretty good one to use. Buy it at a local bird shop. Please look up proper dosing for your bird's weight.

Seed moths around the house
by: Tracie

These are seed moths coming from the seeds you feed your bird. In one way, it is a good sign that the person growing the seeds didn't spray the crop with chemicals to kill the bugs, so the seed will hurt your bird. :-)

You can avoid the moths by freezing the seed for a few days before storing in the bird room. Sometimes people have problems with mold when doing this if they bring the seed out of the freezer and into a very warm environment. Don't take it from the freezer into an 85 degree room, for instance.

Another way to kill the emerging larvae is to mix diatomatious earth in with your seed. Many farm and feed stores call this DE, by the way. DE is completely safe, accept you don't want to get it into your eyes or the bird's eyes. Mix a little in the seed, but don't stir it around or it will irritate your eyes.

The last, and less attractive solution in my opinion, is to have seed moth traps around the room for the seed moths to fly into and get stuck. If your bird doesn't fly around the room, then it can't get stuck in them, but you still have to deal with the moths so I don't like them. I sell them though for those that do. :-)
