Caique biting fingers

Hello, I have a WB Caique. I have had her for 10 months and she is one year old. She is a sweetie. Very playful as Caique's are. She has lots of toys in her cage and out of her cage, in all of her play areas. She preffers to play with toys while standing on my hand, or at least while holding onto my finger with one foot (sometimes while laying on her back) I try to get her to play on her own more and can tell that she does while I am not around.

Recently, she has started nipping at my fingers while playing with her toys. She is even ignoring her toys and going for my fingers. I try to replace my finger with her toy, but she avoids the toy and goes for my finger again. Why is she doing this and ho can I get her to stop going for my finger and choose the toy?? I am worried it will lead to biting?

Thank you for your help

Bird biting fingers
by: Tracie

I am sorry you are experiencing this. I waited to answer, in case someone else might have some suggestions. It sounds like you are going to have to train your bird to not do this, by teaching it a replacement activity.

Please read the training articles on our Parrot Training page to get some tips on teaching your bird to respond with a different action when you want it to stop biting.

This will likely take a lot of time and patience on your part, but it is possible to get the bird to learn a "trick" that will be more interesting than your fingers.
