Caique with a little redness on ankle

by Pete
(Los Angeles, CA)

I have a YT Caique and he's had this little pinkish patch on one of his ankles, but not the other. I didn't think much of it because he doesn't seem to be bothered by it, but visually it looks a bit weird because his other ankle isn't like that. It doesn't seem to bug him at all when I rough-house with him and when I touch that spot he doesn't even react.

I removed his sandy perch a while ago thinking that it might be causing it, but it still persists... he's not in pain or anything and I can touch that area as much as I want and nothing seems to bug him about it... Is this something I should be concerned with?

Bird with redness on ankle
by: The Avian Vet

It could be a normal area that is absent of pigmentation. It may be a mild bumblefoot lesion. What kind of perches are in his cage? What does he sleep on. Dowel perches tend to cause these kinds of lesion. To be sure it is not a problem, you need to take you bird in to see an avian veterinarian.

Redness on ankle
by: Tracie

Dr B will eventually answer this, but I don't think the perch is causing the problem. Our avian vet uses the sandy perches and the Polly Pastel perches. As long as you bird also has some natural branches also, the perches will not cause problems.
