can a 40 yr old parrot learn new words?

Considering they can live up to 75 years' with proper care, your bird is fairly young and yes, he can learn more words. If this bird has been neglected, then speaking only a couple of words is actually very good.

The more important issues to consider here are recent Avian Vet examinations and a complete diet of organic pellets. We recommend all new birds be examined by an Avian Vet during the first few days they are with us. If you have not done this, you will have to find an Avian Vet ONLY in your area and have him examined for infections or other physical problems. Older birds who have had to eat poor diets can have liver problems, so you will need blood work done to see how his organs are functioning. He will need to be checked for both bacterial and viral infections as well.

Diet should be 80-85% organic pellets like Harrisons found here. It takes time to change from poor diets of seeds and/or junk food, so below is link to article written by Avian Vet on how to go about the change. Bird has to be examined by avian vet prior to change of diet.

Switching Birds To Pellets article

Please do not ignore the fact that he needs a medical exam and high quality food. He's lived for 40 years', so make sure he lives the rest of his life with yearly avian vet checkups and a decent diet.

Talking is way down on the list of what this bird needs right now. thanks for writing and keep in touch,
Linda
