canary feather loss...

Canary feather loss

Canary feather loss

Hello, I am new to being a bird owner (3mos). My male canary has been loosing feathers for a month now. I have been giving daily baths, and extra protein in his diet. I also purchased a cage cover, and make sure he is put to bed at dark and uncovered at dawn. He chirps frequently, especially when talked to. His activity is good, appetite is good.
Now, I have noticed white streak on the feathers of his head. Should I be worried?

Thank you so much for your comment and advise. I understood that Winter Molting was not normal. The only addition to his food has been Millet and Boiled Egg, which he seems to enjoy. I will add the suggested food to his diet. Also, he is removing the new fluffy feathers and chewing on them. When I see him do this, I provide a bath to distract him. What do you make of that?

Editor's note: It is fine that the bird chews on the feathers falling out. If bare spots appear, then Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird in person.

I feel like your bird is molting and this is normal. The color change could be normal or it could be nutritional deficiencies. I recommend that canaries eat 50% pellets like Harrison's or Roudybush, 30% seeds and the remainder fresh greens and veggies.
