Canary plucking feather and completely lost tail

Our crested red factor canary all of a sudden began to pluck his feathers and both sides are raw (within a few days). He has also lost all his tail feathers. He started out by sitting in his gravel dish now he sits there all the time. I came home and found fluffy feathers all over the floor. He hasn't molted since we've had him (he is under a year old) but our yellow canary has never had this problem even in molt season. Do I need to take him to a vet or what is he lacking?

I supplement a couple times a week with apple and lettuce and he always has plenty of water. He is a beautiful singer but hasn't sang for a few days either.

If your bird is plucking, then there is a problem. It could be an infection. Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.
