Canary stopped singing

by Suzie

My canary was the most beautiful singer ever. He is 6-7 years old. This summer he just stopped singing and making any noise of any kind.

He is fine. He eats like a little pig. He plays .. and is very alert.

I have tried song bird seed.. He does not sing.
What is his problem ?????????

Canary stopped singing
by: khulood

My canary used to sing almost all the time, he likes playing with the bells around him, its a male canary.
I was very happy playing with him, keeping him on my shoulders: I just wanted to teach my canary to be there when he is out of the cage, as i did the same with my love birds.
suddenly, I realized my canary started to oped him mouth wider 7 wider when he sees my hand or finger!! I got so upset? one day I went so close & wanted to play.He opened his mouth & wanted to bite me for the first time..I shown my finger to him..just to see if my canary is angry! he bited like anything until my blood came out 7 then he stopped.. Since then he stopped singing. i tried many ways like : playing sounds of birds, keeping him in bitween the grass in my garden, giving him variouse types of food(my carany eats seed, broccoly, cakes, sweets, breads, apples, rice & eggs too)Now he just make some sounds when every he is hungry, asking for some seeds!!?!????
please help!! what to do ..I want my same canary there any way?

Canaries generally stop singing during their molt. Molts can last for several weeks to even a few months. If this is not the problem then I recommend that you take your bird in to see an avian veterinarian for an exam.

Singing canary

When going through an extremely heavy moults canaries will stop singing. This can go on for months before they start to sing again.

They can also stop singing if they have a female with them.

Or if they're ill. They're also extremely good at hiding any illness so a vet check might help just to rule this out. If the is well (according to a vet) then it's most likely a moult.

Canaries usually don't sing while molting which they normally do at the end of the summer or early fall. If he continues to be silent once you see all his new feathers are in, it would be a good idea to take him to an Avian Vet for a checkup. As for his diet, if it is an all seed diet, they are missing many nutrients, and you may wish to try an organic pelleted diet with him. He may take right to it, or it could take a while. Tracie has several types out here, and get the grind size appropriate for your bird's size.

I'd take him to the Avian Vet as well to make sure he's not harboring an infection that has yet to modify his behavior other than singing.
