Canary with Clipped Toe Nails

We recently clipped our Canary's toenails (a groomer did actually) and now whenever he hops to a perch he falls off of it. He's been sitting on the lowest perch, moping.

Any ideas?

First, you should make sure that the perches are the correct size and not too large. Also make sure they are not smooth or slick. Second, put a pedicure perch as the highest perch in the cage. Your bird will sleep on this perch and never need another nail trim. The perch you should get is a Polly's Pastel Pedicure Perch Baby Large.

There is nothing you can do for too short nails except let them grow out. Your Canary will start adjusting shortly. Make sure the perches are not too small as birds of all kinds need natural branch perches which have different diameters all along them. These kind of perches allow birds feet and legs to relax and not stay curled tightly all the time.

So, if you have your Canary on wooden dowel perches, find some natural branch perches either on the internet or in a pet store. Make sure the overall diameter fits his feet.

Never allow a groomer to cut your bird's nails. ALWAYS take your bird to an Avian Vet for any kind of grooming or exams as they KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING, and a dog groomer WILL NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH A BIRD.Many birds have been lost because a groomer has cut their nails off too short, and the bleeding continues and bird bleeds out. You are lucky that yours is okay for now, but I imagine the ends of the nails are sore, so allow them to heal. If you feel bird is not doing well, take him to a Avian Vet to be examined and cleared for infections, etc. Also always stay with your bird when it is being examined and/or groomed as it helps them to feel more secure. All birds are afraid of nail clippings, and your Canary will now be even more afraid after being butchered by the groomer.
