canary with swollen butt

by Jerri
(Anderson, SC)

i have had this canary for 9 months, i did bring it to the vet he took an x-ray and put it on the internet to see if any of the other drs knew what it was. They came back with swollen liver from a seed diet so she is now on zupren diet and still no change, we tried antibiotics and no change. She can not fly because her belly & butt is so swollen does anyone have an idea what it could be?

Canary with health problems
by: The Avian Vet

Where can I view the x-rays? How old is this canary? If only 9 months, I do not think it is a fatty liver. If older, then fatty live could cause all of these symptoms. Also if fatty liver, it will take months to more than a year to get it corrected.

Was any blood work done? I have seen lots of canaries on seeds and never a fatty liver, although I have seen over weight canaries. I do not recommend feeding ZuPreem. It is very high in sucrose (table sugar) and it has many artificial ingredients. Canaries need some seed in their diet. I recommend feeding a healthy canary 50% pellets like Harrison's or Roudybush, 40% seeds and 10% fresh foods like greens and other vegetables.
