Caregiver to Charlie

I have 2 Yellow Head Amazons. Both are females. One who is younger looks great. The other one (Charlie) looks terrible. Charlie is 29. He does not pick his feathers. Loves baths but just looks unkept. Does he need some vitamins or what?

Your birds need to be on a pellet diet such as Harrison's and needs to be seen by an avian veterinarian.

There are many things that can cause your bird to look like this. Usually I see nutritional deficiencies, but it can also be disease especially liver failure if your bird has been eating seeds his whole life.

An exam and work up by an avian veterinarian can diagnose the problems. Vitamins will not help your bird(s). They need to be on a balanced diet. Feeding a quality pellet diet is the only way to guarantee this.

(If you need instructions for converting your birds to a healthy diet, there are a couple of articles on the Parrot Training page.)
