chickens feathers

by michaella
(missouri)

It looks like my chickens feathers are turing brown and breaking I guess you could say some of them have started falling out on other chickens and it does look like some of them have started growing back but not by much i am a little worried because it is winter and i don't want them to be to cold they are about 6-7 months and they are not laying yet!

Chickens not laying eggs yet
by: The Avian Vet

They may not be old enough to lay depending on what breed you have. Do your chickens have a way to take a dust bath? This is very important to the health of the feathers. What are you feeding them? Diet is very important and should be a commercial layer formula.

Before doing anything, you will have to take one or more of them to an Avian Vet in your driving area. In the meantime, they will need either a source of heat in their area or to be brought into the house to be kept warm. It's too late in the year for molting their feathers, so you are dealing with sick birds probably. They will freeze to death if left outside and sick.

Take them ONLY TO AN AVIAN VET because dog and cat vets are not licensed or trained in the care of birds of any kind. Your birds will need to be kept warm if it turns out they are sick, so get something ready for them.

They make these "no light emitter" heat lamp bulbs that screw into a regular light bulb socket. Your chicken coop would have to be set up for this. If it is not, then you'll need to do this because birds can freeze if left outside in the winter. I know they are chickens, and they are still very young. The very least they have to have is small enclosed area with perches or nests so they can rest and keep warm during the night and early morning.
