claw pecking and regurgitation

by susan

My 3 y/o white faced grey cockatiel continuously pecks at her/his right hand claw then appears to regurgitate. This acting is repeated about 10 to 15 times per session, at intervals staggered intervals during the day. Is this normal behavior? She does this while on her perch in her cage.
Thank you
Susan - Israel.

Bird pecking foot and regurgitating
by: The Avian Vet

I would not call it normal but I have known several birds that do this, cockatiels and other birds. I do not know what causes this. I recommend that you have your bird examined by an avian veterinarian. It can be related to abnormal reproductive activity, crop infection, or a behavior abnormality.

claw pecking and regurgitation
by: Linda

I'm sorry to inform you that this is not normal behavior. All parrots regurgitate some usually with their favorite humans and/or toys. But this combined with the biting at the claw is not normal. You will need to have your bird examined by an Avian Vet ONLY in your driving area. Do not take to a dog and cat vet unless you have no other options. Only Avian vets are licensed and trained in the diagnosis and treatment of birds and other exotic animals. Your bird could have an infection or some other physical issue that needs to be looked into and fixed. Please begin immediately in your search for an Avian Vet to examine your bird. Have bird checked for infections both viral and bacterial and have some basic bloodwork done to see how organs are functioning. Be prepared to tell them exactly what your bird eats everyday, what kind of cage he's in and if you boil your water or filter it somehow. Water supplies worldwide are full of chemicals and toxins that cause various illness/disease and cancers of all kinds.

Thanks for writing and let us know what the avian vet has to say about what is causing this.

Great question! I am eager to find this out as well. It almost looks like she is laughing so hard she throws up. Can someone share their expertise!
