Cockatiel Dandruff

by Hannah
(Victoria Australia )

Hi my names Hannah and my inquiry is for my male Tiel Dinky, lately his been pulling his feathers out. I've got him a new cage, toys and treated him with lice and mite treatment but I've noticed that when he grooms he has dandruff. I'm trying to get him onto greens but he refuses to eat them. Is there anything else I should do?

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Hanna I have a cocatiel also.He also has this dandruff stuff. The vet said it is nothing to worry about. My little cokatiels name is Joey he loves eating peas.Every night we eat diner he hops on the table and has his little plate of peas.Ijust zap them in the microwave with a little bit of water and a pinch of suger.Joey is one happy little bird.He also love eating grass seed,I go hunting for some every morning.Keep trying Im sure you will find something your little bird loves to eat other then seed.Good luck

Editor's note: Please leave off the sugar, it is bad for your bird. Make sure you don't feed your bird salt either.

Cockatiel dandruff and feather plucking
by: Tracie

It is normal for cockatiels to have dandruff. You don't need to treat for lice or mites if your bird is inside in a clean environment. In fact, Dr B says that the treatments can cause illness or death if not prescribed by an avian vet. The over the counter stuff is harmful here in the USA.

Dr B suggests that you read his Feather Damaging Behavior article and then Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird soon.

As far as diet goes, the very best thing you can do to insure your bird is healthy is to feed your bird 80% Harrison's or Roudybush pellets and only 20% healthy treats.

Here are some places in Australia you can purchase Harrison's from:
