Cockatiel (female) Bad Balance Issues

by Luna

Dobby- Bad balance issues

Dobby- Bad balance issues

Dobby- Bad balance issues Mr. Penny- The Male

My cockatiel has had horrible balance and is always leaning forward on her toes. Is that normal? She seems to have bigger feet and longer legs than my other (male) cockatiel. Also (Im not sure if it's because she falls to the bottom of the cage) she hangs out at the bottom of the cage and leans her head against the bars or the ground then sleeps.

We took her to the vet and they said she had bacterial infection and that seemed to help a little bit but she still has bad balance. It only helped her not be as restless. She eats as usual if not more.

Also, I searched the internet and I found that maybe it was a calcium deficieny but I'm not actually sure.

I'd appreciate your help as soon as possible because I'm really wondering what to do...

Thanks for all the help. Im starting to beleive it's just a brain problem. I've been doing a lot of research and she's very healthy and also have been like this since I got her at 6 months old. So I'm trying all this things and they got used to the waterbottle. Thanks for all the help again! I really appreciate it!

Training birds to drink from Lixit water bottle
by: Tracie

We attach the Lixit water bottle next to or near where the water dish is. We reach in and push the ball or move the "stick" in the center depending on what bottle you have, and let them see water comes out of it.

We spend time watching the birds to see when they try the bottle, because once they know water comes from there, they WILL drink from it. You can put tape or a mark on the bottle where the water level is and see if any water goes down while you are not home also.

We just wait until we see that they know water is there, wait a couple of days to see they drink and then remove the water dish.

Cockatiel with balance problems
by: Tracie

If your bird is eating a diet of 80% healthy pellets like Harrison's or Roudybush then you don't have to worry about nutritional problems. It your bird is eating mostly seed, colored pellets or table food then health issues will likely be a problem.

You can help avoid bacterial infections by providing clean water in a water bottle instead of a dish that becomes bacteria laden within 2 - 3 hours.

If you did not take your bird to an avian vet, I encourage you to Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird.
