Cockatiel losing lots of wing feathers.

by Vivian
(Illinois)

Hi, I've had my cockatiel, Dusty for 9 years now and just at 4 am (Which was about half an hour ago as I'm typing this) I woke up to hearing him fall in his cage. I got up and checked on him and he quickly climbed onto me. I then noticed he had tons of his feathers from only his wings gone. I don't think it's molting, he has never molted like this. I am very worried and nothing like this has ever happened. He seems okay now, he is grooming himself and trying to sleep.

Thank you for your help.

Cockatiel falling

It sounds like he had what is called a ?night fright?. He likely thrashed in his cage and lost the feathers due to trauma. They should grow back in 6-8 weeks, maybe a little longer. You should have him examined by an avian veterinarian to be sure it is not more serious.
