Cockatiel - picking on her foot, why?

25 year old Cockatiel - recently started picking at her right foot, compulsively. Foot appears slightly reddened, and raw in one area (in the joint of the front toe). Further, the right foot appears weaker than the left - however, it does not seem to affect her mobility to a great extent. She gets irritated when we try to distract her from "pick" at her foot. Also, no changes in diet.

Take your bird to an avian vet
by: Tracie

Hello Bill,

Dr. B suggests you take the bird to an avian vet. You don't want to treat the bird for something it may not have. You need to have tests run to find out what is wrong and get the appropriate treatment.

Cockatiel - Picking on foot
by: Bill Billmire -

Thanks, Dr. B

Her diet remains a standard pre-bagged Cockatiel Seed mix. Some treats are dried whole grain breads & the packaged "seed logs", available from nearby pet stores. She enjoys the treats, & has eaten them for years without incident or sickness.

Are there any home treatments for gout that you can recommend. Her living environment is clean & maintained daily.

I doubt injury is the cause, she hasn't flown in a couple of years (due to her age I believe [25 years]), so I carefully transport her from her large cage to her "Play Area" (aka: Tweeterland)

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer...

Parrot picking at foot
by: The Vet

What is your bird?s diet?

This could be early signs of gout. You should have her seen by an avian veterinarian, preferably a specialist, board certified.

IT could also be an allergy to something she is on contact with, but less likely if it is only one foot.

It could also be an injury.

Have her looked at by an avian vet to be sure. IF it is gout, it should be treated immediately.
