Cockatiel pulling at his toes and squeeking

by Kelly Anderson
(Southampton, UK)

Hi, my cockatiel is pulling at his long middle toe and squeeking as if this hurts him. he is a rescue bird found outside but I have had him for over a year now. He was found being bullied by magpies and I nursed him back to health, I suspect he was an avairy bird that escaped as he will only eat his seed and no fresh foods I give him. As a result I have no idea how old he is or his past history.

Should I be concerned about this toe pulling ? he doesnt do it all the time just occasionally but its as if its giving him some kind of discomfort.

You really need to Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird in person to find out what is causing this behavior. It could be an infection that will spread to other parts of his/her body.

Also, you might see if your avian vet has Harrison's pellets to you can switch the bird to a healthier diet. Please read our Switching Birds To Pellets article that was written by our avian vet.
