cockatiel with swollen belly

by barbara

our female cockatiel has a very swollen belly - took her to a general vet 7 days ago. He seemed to think it was some sort of internal infection and not egg bound ... has given antibiotics to put in her water. That was a week ago but nothing has changed ... still the same swelling. Bird is eating and pooing.

Her history : after hatching and raising 3 chicks she kept laying eggs non - stop. Also was mating a lot with her mate. After 26 eggs accumulated in the nesting box and none hatched I took them all away and shortly after this she developed the very large swelling in her lower belly area. She is approx 6 years old
Thank you - Barbara

You need to find an avian veterinarian. Antibiotics in the water is effective when there IS an infection, but in this case, you need to have diagnostics done, starting with blood work and x-rays.

Your bird could be eggbound which is a life threatening situation. It could also be a tumor, or fluid from liver or heart disease, peritonitis, and so many more possibilities. You can search for an avian veterinarian on either of these two sites or
