"gasping" for breath?
by: Anonymous

My cockatiel is about 8 yrs old and she has periodically during her life done something that looks like she is choking or gasping for air. She doesn't do it all the time and when she does, it'll be off and on for less than half an hour. I was told that she was moving food that is stored in the crop to her throat or stomach. This makes sense to me, they do store food in the crop or craw. And, like I said, she is 8 yrs. old, has had many routine visits to vets and is doing just fine.

Tony, if he is doing this a lot, then he MAY BE GASPING FOR BREATH, AND YOU NEED TO TAKE HIM TO SEE AN AVIAN(BIRD) VET IN YOUR DRIVING AREA.

Birds do NOT normally gasp in this way, and it may mean your bird is very sick and will die without medical treatment. Take him ONLY TO AN AVIAN VET as the regular dog and cat vets are NOT LICENSED to treat birds and will make him sicker instead of better.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
