Cockatiels dark tounge

by Renee
(St. Louis, MO)

Why is my 2 month old cockatiel tounge a little dark on the end, almost black? I dont see it in any other 6 birds? Is this a sign something is wrong? This is a lutina by the way.

Cockatiel with dark tongue

Lutino cockatiels can have pigment on the tongue, but you need to have this looked at by an avian veterinarian.

This could be indication of a health issue, and I recommend you take bird to an Avian Vet for a checkup and let them decide if this is a problem or not.

All new birds need to be seen by an Avian Vet within the first few days or week of purchase because most are already infected with some kind of bacterial infection or may have some other physical issue that will show up later.

Baby birds that have been hand raised also have to be given a clean bill of health before they are sold. A breeder or person not willing to do this before the sale may be hiding something that will cost you a lot of money later. Beware of birds that are "almost being given away" because there is usually always something very wrong there.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
