Cockatoo sick?

by Kathy
(Sydney Australia)

My three year old cockatoo seemed to have diarrhea. His droppings were solid creamy white for a couple of days so I put him immediately on Psittavet (from Vetafarm) It is not easy to get to a vet. after four days his droppings are more regularly formed but have taken on a green color.

I was thinking the Psittavet may have caused it. I tried to post in his droppings for testing but the clinic I sent them to has closed. He is more active and is eating but I noticed he is vomiting up half digested food. (or half chewed) Can I safely wait a couple more days to see if he gets better or does this need immediate vet attention.

He is a naughty bird, destroys everything he can get a hold of. I always try my best to just keep wood available but it is possible he could have gotten a hold of metal (nail?) I can't tell- he is so mischievous.

Cockatoo sick

Hi Kathy, Psittavet is an Antibiotic. Your parrot is most probably bringing up his food because he has a Yeast infection in his crop from the Antibiotics. You can't self medicate your parrot everytime you think he is sick. You will need to get him to an Avian vet in order to get the proper medication for this Yeast infection. If it is a yeast infection, the medication is horrible but is very necessary. It is a 7 day course of liquid you need to get your parrot to swallow using a syringe.

Let me know how it goes.

Cockatoo needs an avian vet

Stop using the Psittavet. This is complicating his condition. Never use over the counter medications or stuff purchased on the internet. It will only mask symptoms while your bird becomes worse.

NO DO NOT wait. Seek medical attention immediately.
