Cockatoo tongue question
by: The Avian Vet

There is tissue in the back of the oral cavity that sometimes will appear red or dark pink. This is normal, however, it is important that you have your bird examined to be sure that this color change is not due to infection or some other medical condition. You should watch your bird for other symptoms such as coughing, regurgitating, head-shaking, scratching under the beak, opening the mouth continuously, or sticking out his tongue. Regardless if you feel that your bird is healthy, it is recommend that birds be examined by an avian veterinarian every year to screen for problems that you may not see and to establish normal values for comparison in the even he does become sick.
