Cockatoo with reddish crop cockatoo escaped today out of her cage and chewed up the arm of my sofa...mostly the stuffing. I put her back in her cage and she drank and ate. She is very good about spitting out anything other than food so I don't think she swallowed any stuffing? I put her in her cage and she was very thirsty and drank a lot and then ate.

I noticed in a bit that she was preening and the feathers around her crop were parted. Her crop stuck out a bit and was reddish in color. She is pooping fine, acting fine...eating and drinking fine. We got home a bit ago and her crop is full of food. Earlier it felt like it may have been full of water. What is the normal color and appearance of a crop empty and full? Does it stick out when it is full, and is it red? I could find nothing on the internet to help me.
THANKS SO MUCH! Blessings!

red crop

red crops are not normal in any bird, especially after they ate what yours did. Sorry but you need to take the bird to an avian vet asap.

Cockatoos DO ingest foreign material
by: The Vet

Cockatoos are the one species that will ingest foreign material, especially fluffy cotton like material. I have removed materials like this from multiple birds. You need to take her to see an avian veterinarian immediately. I feel she could have ingested this material.

The crop is not supposed to be red. You saw bare spots because it was distended. Then after she drank made I distend more, possible because the cotton material became swollen from the water.

This is an emergency situation and you should not wait. They need to take x-rays and do a contrast study, too. The longer you wait, if she did ingest this, the more serious it will become and will be life-threatening.
